Part Two in Coupon Tips

General Helpful Hints:

  • Have your list carefully organized before you go shopping.

  • Have coupons cut and organized to minimize confusion, frustration and time.

  • Watch your cashier carefully.

  • Make sure all your coupons get scanned, all promotions come off your total and all items ring up correctly--otherwise you might not be getting the best deal.

  • Have your total figured out before you go shopping. This will ensure that you will know at checkout if anything got missed.

  • Before checking out, double check quantities of promotional items. For example: "Mix and Match any 10 participating General Mills products and receive $5 off at checkout". This means you have to buy in quantities of 10. Make sure you only have 10, 20 etc.

  • Read the fine print on all coupons and ads.

  • Watch expiration dates on food as well as on coupons.

  • Use club cards where offered.

  • Even if an item is free you still have to pay tax on it.

  • Don't be afraid to ask for a manager.

  • Look for e-coupons offered by your local grocery store.

  • You need one manufacturer coupon per item. You cannot use one coupon for multiple items or sets of items. For example: $1 off two boxes of cereal, means you need one coupon for every two boxes.

  • Check the specifications on every coupon and ad carefully. Check for things like; ounces, quantities etc. Buy the correct item.

  • You can always call a parent company and ask for coupons to be sent to you for their items.

  • Don't buy anything your family won't use no matter how good of a deal it is!!

  • You don't have to get EVERY deal. There is always another deal.

  • Sale cycles rotate roughly every three months. Stock up for 3 months.

  • Couponing is just like any other new skill. It takes time to master. Be patient!

New Printable Coupons

Utah Deal Diva posted several links to some great, high-value printable coupons.

I love the Lysol wipes, and the Dishwasher Detergent coupons. They are both Facebook coupons, so you need to log into your account and "like" the company in order to print the coupons. You can print each coupon twice. Usually coupons like this reach their print limit quick, so be sure and print them while you can!

Homemade Bread

I love to make homemade bread. It's become a hobby of mine. It's so yummy, and a lot of fun to make. I have tried several different recipes, but the one I like the most is the one Utah Deal Diva posted a while back. You can find the recipe here. This recipe makes 2 big loaves.

I use half of the sugar the recipe calls for, and I find it still has a really good taste. Dough Enhancer really does help wheat bread a lot. I buy mine at Macey's during the case lot sales for $3.99.

I have also found that sometimes you need all of the flour the recipe calls for (6 cups) and sometimes you don't. I think it depends on the weather outside. I usually use between 4 1/2 to 6 cups. I always add the wheat flour first, and then the white flour. You know you have enough flour when the dough pulls away from the sides of the mixing bowl, but still just slightly sticky. If you use too much flour, the bread will crumble when cut.

Smith's Sale: Cheap GM Cereal

Utah Deal Diva is reporting that starting tomorrow, Smith's will have a great sale on GM Cereal. Click here for details!

Last Week's Shopping Trips

Last week, I ended up going to three different stores. I do not do this every week, but it worked out that I had the time on Friday afternoon. My girls went to their piano class on, and so I used that time and took my son with me to run errands. I wrote out my detailed list and went. It took me about an hour and a half. My mom's family was in town on Saturday and we were asked to bring a green salad to a lunch on Saturday. I took a trip to Sam's club and spent $16.10. I went to Macey's and bought a bunch of produce and laundry detergent. My total came to $24.04 and then I used one of my produce vouchers that I bought on City Deals, which brought my total down to $14.04. Then I went to the bread store, and bought 12 loaves of bread for $10.30. My total between all three shopping trips was $40.44. If you add the $5.00 in that I paid for the City Deals voucher, that still only brings my total to $45.44. It felt really good to have my plan laid out before I went to the store. It saved me a lot of time in the store, as well as money.

Changes to Smith's Rewards Program

Utah Deal Diva posted yesterday that there are changes coming to Smith's Rewards Program. Click here to find out all of the details.

Homemade Strawberry Jam

I bought some strawberries last week when they were on sale at Macey's and made Jam. I love homemade Strawberry Jam. I remember growing up, my mom always made homemade jam. I don't think I had store bought jam until I was older. As this is the beginning on sales on strawberries, I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities to make more jam soon! It is so easy to make, and so, so, yummy. The recipe for jam is inside the package of pectin. You can find pectin in the canning section of the grocery store. I prefer to make strawberry freezer jam because I like the taste and texture better than cooked jam, but the recipe for both types of jam is in the package. Cut off the stems and wash the strawberries. Mash the strawberries in a bowl. A potato masher (and kids) work great for this. You will want to leave small bits of fruit in the jam, so you do not want to puree the fruit. Measure out the exact amount of fruit and put it into a bowl, you can see I almost have two cups here, which is what the recipe called for. After the fruit is mashed, you will add the sugar & lemon juice (if the recipe calls for it) and let it sit for 10 minutes. It's very important in any type of food preservation that you follow the recipe exactly and it is written and it is even more important to make sure the recipe is from a reliable source (i.e. USU extension of Ball canning book).

Cook the pectin on the stove, as per the instructions in the pectin say to do.

Pour the pectin into the strawberry mixture, and stir for 3 minutes.

Pour the jam into freezer jars. Let them sit out for 24 hours, and then put them in the freezer.

Curse or Blessing?

Last weekend, my dryer sheets apparently fell in the garbage can in my laundry room and accidentally were thrown away. It was Saturday morning that I realized this. I did go to the store after, but I forgot to buy some while I was there. After I realized I forgot to buy more, I really did not feel like going back to the store to buy some. So, I thought I would try going without. I decreased the drying time, as an experiment to see if I really did need dryer sheets. Well, after almost a week, I still have not bought any. I found that if I decrease the drying time, our clothes still get dry, without static. So, we are saving money on not buying dryer sheets, and we are not using as much electricity, which is also saving money. When I set my dryer, I try under-drying the clothes, then if I need to turn the dryer back on for a few minutes, I can do so.
So, as frustrated as I was that they dryer sheets were thrown away, it really has turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Life is like this sometimes. We sometimes are giving opportunities to grow that may on the outside not look they will help us, but really are blessings in disguise.

Now, if I could just see the blessing in all of this snow we are getting!

Coupon Funk

As you may have noticed, we started this blog in January, and then did not post anything for a few weeks. I have always heard about what is termed a "coupon funk", where couponing takes a back seat for a while. I believe I went through a funk in February and most of March. I did not want to go through coupons. I had a stack of coupons piling up , and it seemed like a major chore to even look at them, let alone sit down and clip them out. I did not use many coupons, if any at all at the store. I spent a lot more money on groceries, and on several occasions, I have had to borrow money from other areas in our budget to make up the money I was spending on groceries that was over and above our budgeted amount. I believe we all go through times like this in our lives. Couponing is not for everyone, but one thing I learned about myself during this time is that I love to coupon. I don't spend hours every week doing it. I have one night a week that I go through my coupons, and clip and organize them. What I do not get done during this time, can wait until the next week. Now that I am getting caught up, I want to get our budget back on track. My goal this month, is keep within our grocery budget, and to only shop once a week. We have plenty in our food storage, and I bought 4 of the produce vouchers from Macey's when City Deals had them on for half price last week, so I should not have to go to the store more than once a week. I feel like these goals will help me to get back on track. I just love how every day is an opportunity to do better than we did the day before. It's good to have set-backs every once in a while. They help us do better, and be better. I'm looking forward to what the future holds!

Chicken Breasts $1.28 a pound at Macey's

Fresh Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts are on sale this week at Macey's. You can get a 40 lb. box for $1.28 a pound. I bought a case in January. I divided it up and froze it. Now that the weather has started to warm up, I plan on buying another one and canning it outside on our camp chef stove. I was at my sister-in-law's house last week, and she opened a can of chicken she canned last year. It was so tender and yummy. I am really excited about canning some this week. My sister-in-law mentioned that she hardly ever makes freezer meals anymore because it's just so easy to open up a can of chicken for a meal. She told me that you can fit about 1 pound of chicken in a pint canning jar. Have any of you canned meat before? Let us know how what your experience has been!

2 lb. package of Strawberries -$1.88 @ Macey's!

I just love this time of year when Strawberries are one sale. As we mentioned before, Macey's is having a grand opening sale, celebrating their new store in Clinton. Strawberries are on sale for $1.88 for a 2 pound package. This is such a great stock up price on Strawberries. It's a great time to make some homemade jam!

Thrifty Tip of the Day

I am always looking for ways to save money in every aspect of my life. Today, I wanted to share one thing that I feel has really helped me over the past few weeks, especially since gas prices have started going back up again.

Instead of waiting until my gas gage is in the red, I now fill up my car when my gas gage is half full. I originally saw the idea from an ad I saw on a bus. I really don't know if it has saved us money on gas, because I have not tracked it, but I feel like it's not such a pinch in our budget. Instead of it costing $80-$90 to fill us our van, it's only half that cost now when I fill up.

Do you have any thrifty tips to share that have helped you save money? We would love to hear them. Please leave us a comment, we would love to hear from you!
